Chemical dependence and alcoholism (addiction to the drug alcohol)
are synonymous terms for the disease of addiction. People
who are suffering emotionally use drugs, not so much for the rush, but to escape from their problems. They are trying to self-medicate
themselves out of loneliness, low self-esteem, unhappy relationships, or stress. A
chemically dependent person has lost the power of choice and is unable to stop drinking or taking a particular mood-altering
chemical despite serious health, economic, vocational, legal, spiritual, and social consequences. It is a disease that does
not see age, sex, race, religion, or economic status. It is progressive and chronic and if left untreated can be fatal. Though
the disease can't be cured, it can be arrested and treated (kept in remission). The disease is far more complex than the mere use and abuse of mood-altering chemicals, and recovery is far more complex then
just becoming abstinent. In order to maintain abstinence, one must make personal, interpersonal, and lifestyle changes.

Horses Heal works with individuals
and recovery center groups to provide an alternative therapy that compliments their regular therapeutic treatment
program. Equine therapy helps participants become more confident with themselves while feeling the power of these
amazing creatures. Therapy with the use of horses can often help participants realize
truths about themselves that they would never have found otherwise. “The program with the horses
has been an amazing experience. I learned a lot about the animals and myself! I have been able to recognize some
key issues with my alcohol addiction. If people are willing to work an honest recovery, the equine therapy will
help open doors to any emotions or issues not known. It’s given me something to work on each week. I enjoyed
being a part of this so much and will value what I've learned from the people and horses here.” –Michelle
